Garage Cleanout Tips: How to Reclaim Your Garage This Weekend

If you can't park your car in your garage, you're not alone. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25% of people with two-car garages can't park any cars in them, and 32% can only fit one. In the Inland Empire — where summer temps push 110 degrees — a garage you can actually park in isn't a luxury, it's survival.

The 4-Zone Method

The fastest way to clean out a garage is to stop thinking about it as one giant project and break it into four zones. Pull everything out of the garage and sort it into:

Zone 1: Keep. Things you've used in the last 12 months. Tools you actually reach for. Holiday decorations. Sports equipment the kids still use. Seasonal items. If you haven't touched it in over a year, it probably doesn't belong here.

Zone 2: Sell. Items in good condition that have resale value — power tools, bikes, furniture, electronics. Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp move fast in the IE. Price things to sell, not to sit. If it doesn't sell in two weeks, move it to Zone 3 or Zone 4.

Zone 3: Donate. Clothes, kitchenware, books, working appliances, furniture in decent shape. Goodwill, Salvation Army, and local churches in Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, and Fontana all accept donations. Some will even pick up from your home.

Zone 4: Trash/Haul. Broken items, old mattresses, mystery boxes you haven't opened since your last move, dried-up paint cans, that exercise bike that's been a clothes rack for three years. This is where a junk removal service earns its money.

What Most People Find in Their Garages

After doing hundreds of garage cleanouts in the Inland Empire, here's what we see over and over:

When to DIY vs. When to Call a Pro

DIY it if: you have a free weekend, a truck or SUV, and less than a pickup-truck worth of stuff to get rid of. The Rancho Cucamonga and Fontana transfer stations accept residential loads for reasonable fees.

Call a pro if: you have heavy items (couches, appliances, concrete), more than a truck load, hazardous materials, or you just want it done in two hours instead of two days. A professional crew will load, haul, and dispose of everything while you supervise with a cold drink.

Keeping It Clean After

The cleanout is the easy part. Keeping it clean is where most people fail. A few things that help:
