Downsizing

The Complete Downsizing Checklist for Seniors and Families

Downsizing is one of those things that sounds simple until you're standing in a house full of 30 years of memories trying to decide what fits in a space half the size. Whether you're helping a parent move to a smaller home, transitioning to assisted living, or just ready for less stuff — here's how to do it without losing your mind.

Start with the New Space

Before you touch a single box, get the floor plan of where you're moving. Measure every room. Know exactly how much furniture and storage you're working with. This turns an emotional process into a practical one — you're not deciding what to "get rid of," you're deciding what fits.

The Four-Box Method

Go room by room with four categories:

The key: make decisions once. Don't create a "maybe" pile. Maybe piles become permanent piles.

Room-by-Room Guide

Kitchen: Keep one set of dishes, one set of pots and pans, and your daily-use appliances. That bread maker from 2009 that's been used twice? Donate it. Duplicate utensils, mismatched Tupperware, specialty gadgets — all go.

Living Room: Measure your new living room. Usually only the main couch and one accent chair will fit. Entertainment centers rarely make sense in smaller spaces — consider a wall-mounted TV instead.

Bedrooms: A queen bed, nightstand, and small dresser is typically all a downsized bedroom fits. That armoire and hope chest might need to go to a family member or storage.

Garage: This is usually the biggest job. Tools, holiday decorations, old sports equipment, "I might need this someday" items — garages in Southern California tend to become storage units. Be aggressive here.

Paper and Documents: Keep tax returns (7 years), legal documents, insurance policies. Shred the rest. A lifetime of paper can usually be reduced to one file box.

The Emotional Side

Downsizing isn't just logistics — it's emotional, especially for seniors. Letting go of a family home and decades of belongings is a real loss. A few things that help:
