You booked the junk removal. The date's on the calendar. Now what?
Here's the truth: a little prep on your end makes the whole job go faster, smoother, and cheaper. We've hauled junk out of thousands of homes across Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Fontana, Upland, Corona, Pomona, Anaheim, and Pasadena. The pickups that go best are the ones where the homeowner spent 20 minutes getting ready the night before.
You don't need to do anything crazy. Just follow these steps and you'll be set when the truck pulls up.
Sort Before We Arrive
Walk through the house and make two piles: keep and go. That's it. Don't overthink it.
If you're standing there holding something for more than five seconds wondering if you need it, put it in the "go" pile. You can always pull something back before we load it. But most people don't. Once you decide to let go of something, the relief kicks in fast.
The biggest time killer on junk removal day is indecision. When a homeowner is sorting while we're standing there with the truck running, it slows everything down. That means more time on the job, which can mean a higher price. Do your sorting the night before and you'll save yourself money and stress.
Clear a Path
Think about how the crew gets from your junk to the truck. That's the path you need to clear.
Move cars out of the driveway. Unlock side gates. Open the garage door. If items are in a back bedroom, make sure the hallway isn't blocked with stuff we're not taking.
The easier the access, the faster the job. If two guys can carry a couch straight out the front door and down a clear driveway, that's a ten-minute task. If they have to navigate a narrow hallway, squeeze past parked cars, and figure out a locked gate, it takes three times as long. Easy access saves you money every single time.
Point It Out, Don't Move It
You do not need to drag that old couch to the curb. You don't need to wrestle the broken treadmill down the stairs. That's literally what we're here for.
Just know what's going and where it is. When the crew arrives, walk them through the house, point to everything that needs to go, and step back. We handle the heavy lifting, the carrying, and the loading. That's the whole point of hiring a junk removal service.
If something is especially heavy or in a tight spot, just give us a heads up when you book so we can bring the right crew size.
Separate Valuables and Documents
This one matters more than people realize. Go through every drawer, cabinet, and shelf in the furniture you want hauled away.
We've found cash stuffed in dresser drawers. Jewelry in nightstands. Social Security cards in old filing cabinets. Birth certificates. Passports. A set of car keys to a car the owner forgot they still had.
Once it's on the truck, it's gone. Take fifteen minutes to check every piece of furniture before we arrive. Open every drawer. Flip through every folder. You'll thank yourself later.
What About Hazardous Items?
Set aside anything that might be hazardous: paint cans, motor oil, propane tanks, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, batteries, and anything with a warning label that mentions fumes or flammability.
Let us know about anything unusual when you contact us or when we arrive. We'll tell you straight up what we can and can't take. Most standard household junk is fair game. Hazardous materials usually need to go through your city's household hazardous waste program, and we can point you in the right direction.
If you're not sure about a specific item, call us at (909) 503-7104 before your appointment and we'll let you know.
Day-Of: What to Expect
Here's how junk removal day actually works with Trash Kings:
- The crew arrives during your scheduled window and gives you a call when they're on the way.
- We do a walkthrough with you. You show us everything that's going.
- We give you a final price on the spot, based on how much space your items take up in the truck. No surprises.
- You say yes, we get to work. Loading, carrying, all of it.
- When everything's out, we sweep up the area.
- Most jobs are done in 30 to 90 minutes. Larger cleanouts can take longer, but we'll tell you upfront.
That's it. No complicated process. No hidden fees. Just a crew that shows up, does the work, and leaves your space clean.
Whether you're clearing out a garage in Upland, cleaning out an estate in Pasadena, or just need a single couch picked up in Corona, the process is the same. A little prep goes a long way.
