That old couch isn't going to carry itself out the door. Whether you're moving, upgrading, or clearing out a property, getting rid of furniture is one of those tasks that's always harder than you think. Here's every realistic option for Southern California.
Option 1: Donate It
If the furniture is in decent shape — no rips, no stains, no broken frames — donation is the best first move.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — They'll even pick up for free in many areas. Locations in San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange County.
- Salvation Army — Free pickup for large items. Schedule online or call your local branch.
- Local shelters and churches — Many accept furniture directly. Call ahead.
The catch: donation centers are picky. They won't take mattresses (usually), particle board furniture that's falling apart, or anything with stains or damage. If they reject it, you're back to square one.
Option 2: Sell It
Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist are your best bets. Price it low and mark it "must pick up" to move it fast. Realistically, unless it's quality furniture, this can take days or weeks — and flaky buyers are the norm.
Option 3: Curbside Bulk Pickup
Most cities in the Inland Empire and LA County offer free bulk pickup a few times per year:
- Rancho Cucamonga: 4 free bulky pickups per year through the city
- Ontario: Scheduled bulk pickup through waste hauler
- Fontana: Quarterly bulk collection
- LA City: Free bulky item pickup, schedule online (can take 1-2 weeks)
The downside: you have to get the furniture to the curb yourself, and the wait times can be long. If you're on a deadline — selling a house, ending a lease — this usually doesn't work.
Option 4: Hire a Junk Removal Company
This is the fastest route. A crew shows up (often same-day), carries everything out of the house for you — upstairs, downstairs, doesn't matter — loads it in the truck, and it's gone. They'll also sort for donation so usable pieces don't go to the landfill.
Typical costs in Southern California:
- Single item (couch, dresser, mattress): $75 – $200
- Multiple items (bedroom set, living room set): $250 – $500
- Full house of furniture: $800 – $2,500+
Items We Remove
At Trash Kings, we handle it all: couches, recliners, dining tables, dressers, bed frames, mattresses, desks, bookshelves, entertainment centers, patio furniture — if it fits in our truck, it goes. We also handle the awkward stuff like sleeper sofas, sectionals, and hot tubs.
What NOT to Do
Don't dump furniture on the side of the road or in an alley. Illegal dumping fines in California start at $1,000 for a first offense and can go up to $10,000. Cities like Fontana and San Bernardino have been cracking down with cameras and increased enforcement.
